Wine Enthusiast.
Monterebro Blanco 2015, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Jumilla is a red-wine region, but this Sauvignon Blanc is a citrusy example of a tastyquaffable white from the area. Aromas of citrus peel are mildly pyrazinic, while this feels plump and balanced, but with spritz. Core citrus flavors come with a sprinkle of salt.
Monterebro Joven 2015, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Bold cherry and berry aromas come with a syrupy hint of cough drop. In terms of shape, this is grapy and wide bodied, with plum, blackberry and prune flavors. A medicinal quality to the finish neither helps nor hurts. This is 85% Monastrell and 15% Syrah.
Monterebro Selección 2014, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Ripe black-plum and spice aromas are dense and blocky. This is 85% Syrah and 15% Monastrell, with a jammy palate and a touch of heat and flab. Flavors of raisin, blackberry and prune finish earthy, with an echo of prune and moderately scratchy tannins.
Monterebro Crianza 2013, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Warm earthy ripe aromas of raisin, baked berry fruits and prune are typical of Jumilla and Monastrell, which is 85% of this blend along with 15% Syrah. Punchy and tannic, but not fierce, this is ripe and tastes of raisin, prune and dried herbs. A lasting finish is raisiny and choppy.
Monterebro Barrica 2014, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Slightly rustic earthy aromas of animal, blackberry, plum and cola feed into a jammy palate with just enough acidic pop. Chocolaty blackberry flavors are touched up by resiny oak, while this blend of 85% Monastrell and 15% Syrah tastes similar on a persistent finish.
Monterebro Barrica 2013, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Toasty oak and vanilla aromas are draped heavily over blueberry and blackberry notes. Staunch, rubbery tannins and bold acidity make for a high-toned flavor profile of herbs, black fruit and briny salt. A long, oaky, herbal finish is silky and lusty.

Monterebro Crianza 2011, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Crisp plum and floral aromas rest on rocky base and offer up balsamic notes. This Monastrell-driven blend is full in body, with spicy, herbal, wild-brush flavors accenting core dark plum and berry. A lasting finish is herbal, deep and potent. Drink through 2017.
Monterebro Selección 2011, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Blackberry, cassis and dusty aromas get this full-bodied Syrah-Monastrell off to a great start. This is staunch and well built, with firm tannins and dark, masculine flavors of blackberry, black currant, pepper and a hint of salt. A gutsy finish is powerful but balanced. This is impressive for the price.
Monterebro Barrica 2012, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Berry and plum aromas are lightly earthy, oaky and fiery. A tannic, hard-grabbing palate piles on the astringent tannins, while flavors of herbal berry and minty plum show blatant oak and mint-chocolate on the finish.

Monterebro Joven 2014, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Jammy berry aromas are pleasant and only slightly rubbery. This baby Monastrell (with 15% Syrah) is fresh but choppy and gritty in feel. Pure plum and cherry flavors finish with a medicinal note and lasting acidity.
Monterebro Joven 2013, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Cherry, red currant and cranberry aromas are pure and fruity in front of a tight, bold, hard-driving palate. A short blast of ripe cherry and berry flavors is quickly replaced by toffee and caramel notes, leading to a jammy finish.
Monterebro Rosado 2015, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: A mostly clean, fresh nose delivers mild notes of red fruits and cinnamon dust. A spritzy, medium-weight palate offers salty, almost buttery flavors of citrus and cherry, while the finish tastes much the same.
Monterebro Rosado 2013, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Strawberry and cherry aromas are sweet and a bit like Kool-Aid. The palate on this warm-region rosé is full and chunky, with lots of weight. The berry flavors are a touch heavy, while the finish feels plump and tastes candied. Drink now.
Monterebro Blanco 2014, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain: Aromas of yeast, talcum powder and grass set up a palate of pithy citrus and pyranzinic flavors that are green and grassy. The finish on this Sauvignon Blanc, a grape you don’t see too often in hot Jumilla, is green-flavored and snappy.

Profile Magazine.
It’s got what it shakes. Top tipples are on offer to accompany the posh nosh at a re-launched Sheffield eatery. This month’s recommended wines... Spanish wine producer Bodegas Monterebro has three wines available from various stockists: Monterebro Barrica 2011 has an intense morello cherry red colour, fruity scents and oak hints, and a good structure. Monterebro Selección 2011, made with 15% Monastrell and 85% Syrah grapes, also has a deep colour and an aromatic flavour. Fresh figs, plums and vanilla are all present plus some spice from oak aging, to create a full-bodied wine which would be a good accompaniment to savoury pastries and heavier dishes too. Monterebro Crianza 2010 made with the opposite mix of Monastrell and Syrah as the Selección wine, has also undergone oak aging and has a layered palate. There’s a delicate aroma and initial flavour of blackberries, followed by coffee, chocolate and spices. An elegant wine, which could be drunk on its own or with a meal.

Raise a perfect glass to al fresco dining success. Monterebro Rosado 2012 (D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain): A rosé wine comprising raspberry aromas with intense floral, fruity expressions. This wine goes well with pasta or rice salads, vegetables, fish, poultry and pizzas.
Wine of the Week: Monterebro Joven 2011 (D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain): Monterebro Joven 2011 is a young red wine with no oak, and displays a dark cherry red colour with good depth and intensity. The nose reveals very attractive, complex aromas of ripe fruit. This wine is very well structured on the palate.

Costa News Group.
I’m going to start with three wines from Bodegas Monterebro (D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain). I received some of the first samples and was impressed – as were others. The International Wine Challenge, a respected wine competition, commended their first efforts, even awarding a few medals to boot. This year they’ve gone a step further. Two of their wines were awarded Silver medals with commendations too, plus a number of their wines given 90+ points from respected commentators, like Derek Smedley MW. It sounds condescending to say that Bodegas Monterebro has now come of age, though I mean it approvingly, of course. The wines Jonathan sent me recently have developed a greater depth and richness. There’s a more prominent mouth feel to the wines with a greater length. They remain fruit driven, of course, but they’re slightly more substantial, they have a greater presence. The Monterebro Rosado 2012 combines local Monastrell with Syrah – a fruit orientated, florally fragranced, brightly coloured wine with enough body to be enjoyed with paella and perhaps local dish Gazpacho Murciano. The Monterebro Crianza 2010 is made from old vine Syrah and Monastrell. It’s deeply coloured, quite rich in the mouth and full flavoured yet it retains its elegance. The oak is integrated and it’s a wine to be enjoyed on its own and with food. I particularly liked the Monterebro Selección 2011 – a darkly coloured wine with some damson on the nose along with fleeting, but reoccurring, mountain herb notes. Fruit driven and juicy there is elegance and power balanced with French and American oak flavours and aromas. It could be called a Vino de Autor in that the winemaker has used oak for a length of time, but doesn’t put it into a category of Crianza or Reserva. Bodega Monterebro wants to let the wine to the talking, not the label and certainly not the rule book!
Bodegas Monterebro, D.O.P. Jumilla, Spain. Regrettably, I don’t tend to receive much wine from Denominación de Origen Jumilla. So I was delighted when a case of white and red wines found their way to my door recently. D.O.P. Jumilla, like many DOs of Spain, has reinvented itself. The change, originally gradual, but wholly fast-track in the last ten years, has brought about some of the finest wines produced in South East Spain. It’s clear that D.O.P. Jumilla is now well and truly established on Spain’s map of quality wine producing areas. Bodegas Monterebro is a new bodega, in fact a wine producer whose existence came about as a natural consequence of the parent company’s dealings in the retail wine trade. Currently, the Monterebro portfolio comprises just three wines, a white and two reds. You can expect to see these wines first on restaurant wine lists and then in the supermarkets and shops - provided the as yet limited production can keep up! Monterebro Blanco 2010 (Commended International Wine Challenge, IWC) is a white wine. White flowers, raisons and citrus notes make this aromatic wine an ideal refreshing aperitif as well as enabling it to accompany some of the spicy dishes of South East Asian cuisine, as it is both clean and fresh. There are two reds: Monterebro Joven 2010 and Monterebro Barrica 2010. Both are made with the local grape variety Monastrell, of which regular readers will have heard many times as it is a favourite of mine, producing, as it does, deeply coloured and flavoured red wines, often of distinction. The difference between the two of course is oak and vineyard and grape selection. The Joven has seen no oak but the Barrica (Bronze Medal IWC) has enjoyed four months in new American and French oak barrels (barricas). It’s a style of wine that is becoming ever more popular here in Spain. Consumers want the primary fruit flavours, for the sheer juiciness of the drink - in this case both light and dark cherries with slight plumy notes too, but they require a little more depth of flavour and a touch of complexity, supplied of course by the time spent in wood. There’s a nice balance between fruit and oak in this wine. The oak is integrated but it’s there and adds the required extra depth without taking over the show. I could see this wine being quite a hit at BBQs over the summer where it will be a lovely, tasty and refreshing red wine served very slightly chilled. The Joven (Commended IWC) is also made with Monastrell. It’s light quite fruit driven with not a trace of harshness. Grapes from the older vines are used to make the Barrica so it follows that this young wine would use the younger grapes. The vineyards from which the Monterebro grapes are harvested are at an altitude of between 700 - 750 metres above sea level which affords cool night time temperatures which helps with acidity. The grape clusters (bunches) mature slowly and are harvested when they are small and concentrated. Chalky, sandy soils ensure that the roots have to search for nutrients and the small rocks and stones on the surface and slightly beneath help to hold some moisture from the limited rainfall as well as retaining some of the warmth of the sun to help during the initial growing period when freezing temperatures can be encountered. All three wines, including the white, will respond well to being opened an hour or more before serving and all three can be served chilled - so some super summer sipping in store!
